Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

In my teaching practices, I incorporate DEI by selecting diverse reading materials that reflect a wide range of voices and perspectives, prioritizing works by authors from different racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, as well as texts that address various social justice issues. Likewise, I also create assignments that encourage students to explore and reflect on their own identities and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Whenever possible, I promote student autonomy during in-class activities, as well as in their writing topic and research selections. From day one, I strive to create a safe space where all students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences both in writing and class discussion.

Through equitable assessment methods that recognize and accommodate different learning styles and needs, I ensure that all students have a clear path to success. I’ve found that the employment of DEI into my teaching cultivates a learning environment that is socially conscious and inclusive without sacrificing academic rigor.

I firmly believe that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are foundational principles that enrich the educational experience for all students. Embracing DEI in the classroom means recognizing and valuing the diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences that each student brings. By fostering an inclusive environment, I ensure that every student feels respected, valued, and empowered to contribute. This practice not only enhances the learning experience, but also encourages students to resist ideological polarization. For this reason, DEI is not an abstract concept, but, instead, a practice that influences every aspect of my teaching, from the selection of course materials to the ways in which I facilitate discussions and assess student work.
